Travel Theme: Colour

There are some wonderful colourful birds in Australia. Here are a few taken at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney last week.

Forest Kingfisher

A beautiful Forest Kingfisher flashed by. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Such a gorgeous colour!

and finally another picture of the cheeky female Electus Parrot (apparently the males are green).

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

    I knew NOZZINK of the Noisy Pitta ! – have never even HEARD of it !
    So you’ve widened my horizons as well as causing me to make fond noises over the birds I do know !!!

    1. I took the names from an information panel so I think it is the parrot. Looked up the Rosella and they seem to have whitish bills whereas this one is black, but I could be wrong as there are several different ones!

      1. I mean the one sitting on the feed box (or whatever it is). You’ve marked it Electus Parrot (2). He has a white beak and the markings seem to resemble the rosella more than the electus parrot, don’t you think? (I’m only going off google images, mind you.)

        1. Ah, that one! I was thinking you meant the second image of the parrot. And yes, I do believe it is a Crimson Rosella! Wasn’t on the info board. Thankyou! I was wanting to photograph one of those. 🙂

        4. I really appreciate your help – I was finding it difficult to differentiate between the parrots – never even noticed the second image had the white bill! If only I could find a Galah now, I think they are so pretty though apparently the noise they make isn’t!

        5. I only really picked up on the rosella because I was one when I was a Girl Guide. 😀 Actually, I was originally a Blue Wren. Hence my soft spot for fairy wrens. 🙂

          We used to have a tree at the end of our street that the galahs LOVED. Boy, did they make a racket. A couple of years ago it got cut down. I went out one day and there was a galah sitting on the road staring at the spot where the tree used to be, looking very confused. Still makes me laugh.

  3. It is a shame that we do not have such colourful wild birds here Jude. But then it is the difference that makes the enjoyment, I suppose. Lovely vibrant colours, and a welcome sight on a grey wet day in Norfolk!

    1. Mostly they just flash by so impossible to photograph. Even here in the confined space it took a long time to get any decent photos. I hope to ‘capture’ some more before I leave, but who knows!

      Hope the sun is shining today – it’s not here at the moment, I think we have your cloud cover 😉

        2. Only houses we can’t afford. This probably isn’t the time to visit. The sun is shining and there aren’t many tourists. We know it isn’t like that all year! Lostwithiel looks nice. But you know that.

    1. Stunning aren’t they? I was so surprised and happy to not only see this little fella but also for him to sit long enough for me to get a few shots off!
