ambience and atmosphere

The street market in Barcelona, close to the cathedral, was buzzing with mid-afternoon crowds. Fairy lights and coloured balloons created a party atmosphere and the throb of the Barcelona street drummers, the whistles and cheers of the crowd, all added to the ambience. You could hear and smell this place before you arrived.

But let’s get down to the food:

naughty chocolates and pretty macarons (though I have to confess to never having tasted one)

Calamari anyone?

tempting offerings from the sea, wrapped in newsprint

and busy, busy stall-holders serving out their goods

We came across the food market accidentally, but so glad we did! There is nothing better than a good surprise.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

        1. Haven’t seen any of the Australian on terrestrial TV – they may show the final if Murray makes it that far. Radio 5 Live broadcasts and I believe BBC 2 may show highlights next week. You will have to keep me posted!

  1. Especially when the surprise involves delicious food. This market looks like so much fun. And I have to say, in opposition to the comments here, that a good macaron is delicious. There is a well-known patissier in Australia who is renowned for his macarons, which he creates in many unusual flavours, and they are soooo good. They are a little taste of heaven. 🙂

      1. Adriano Zumbo is the one I’m talking about. He has stores in Melbourne and Sydney. http://zumbo.com.au/ His cakes are to die for…I should know, I’ve eaten plenty of them. 🙂 I make a point of going to his Emporium store when we go to Melbourne. The macarons on DJ’s post look pretty special too.
