The theme for Becky’s April Squares challenge is ‘top’
-
- On Top of the World – summit, crown, peak or uppermost part of something
- Under the Big Top – topping or covering (or if you’re really lucky circus)
- Room at the Top – first or highest in position
- Cherry on Top – something made even more wonderful by becoming square
- Top and Tail – or maybe you’d prefer to play around with word combinations such as top dog, top stitch, top full, top line, top fruit, top hat, top secret, top knot, top drawer and top dollar!
on top of the world
Rocking stones (also known as logan stones or logans) are large stones that are so finely balanced that the application of just a small force causes them to rock. This one sits on top of Trencrom Hill. I’m not sure that this one actually does rock, but it is definitely precariously balanced.
There is a more famous one near Treen, Porthcurno.

Doesn’t the rock in th ebottom right corner look like an animal’s face?
I am always seeing animals in these rocks! Looks like a sleeping puppy!
I see a tortoise!
Everyone is seeing tortoises except for me!
We always knew you were special and unique xx
Me too. 🙂
Looks like a tortoise to me, Pit. 🙂
That could well be!
just what I said!!
Sorry, Becky. I didn’t read your comment. 🙂
ooh no my apologies to you Pete, I was trying to say ‘that’s what I thought too’ 🙂
No problem. 🙂
I blame the exclamation marks… 😆
I do overuse them! See!!!! 🤣
Heehee 😂
My sister used to live on Rockingstone Avenue in Larchmont, New York.
Hopefully a little more stable than this!
Alas, it wasn’t a boulder but a large and very tall tree that proved unstable. It came crashing down on her house in a storm eight years ago, leaving her with a broken rib. That shows how close she came to getting killed. The house was damaged badly enough that she and her husband used their insurance money to move to another house in the neighborhood and sold the damaged house to a developer to be reconstructed.
Wow! That’s quite a tale. Lucky to be alive.
Do you know Brimham Rocks in Yorkshire? Some of those definitely rock – in every sense.
How odd – just fished you out of spam! Jo mentioned Brimham Rocks, that used to be called Crags I believe. I don’t recall visiting them, but may have on a geography trip as we explored an awful lot of North Yorkshire and the Dales. They do look like a place I’d love to visit, so I am putting them on the list for when I make my return to Yorkshire!
Do. It’s worth it. I’m sorry I’m now only good enough for Spam though. What a fate.
That rock is definitely ‘on top’, Jude. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Lots on top, there will be more 😊
oh I like this, a rocking top or topping rock or even toppling!!
Haha… trust you to come up with alternatives! Yes, I could /should have used toppling!
sorry couldn’t resist!
This looks as though it could topple off at any moment!
It does, but it’s probably been like that for hundreds of years!
Now that’s one I definitely wouldn’t stand on top of!
I’ve seen balancing stones like this but I would never try to push one to see if it rocked. What it if rocked too hard and toppled over. That would be disastrous.
Did you read the Treen story?
I have now. I bet that young man learned a lesson.
😊
Reminds me of Brimham Rocks. You must have been there? 🙂 🙂 This one didn’t come up in my Reader yesterday so I’ll refollow. Methinks WP is being naughty.
I’ve missed a few not showing up. Sometimes it helps if you do a refresh. Can’t say I’ve heard of Brimham Rocks.
It’s Yorkshire so I thought maybe with the kids, back in the day 🙂 🙂
I might have been with school on a geography trip, but I didn’t do many trips with the kids. No money and no car.
Those were the days! You have both now and can’t go anywhere 🙂 🙂
Story of my life 😂
