Clocktower of the library, High Street. The library is dedicated to poet Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, who lived and wrote in the town. Elizabeth Barrett Browning Memorial Institute, 1892-6, by Brightwen Binyon.
Tudor Revival style, built as a memorial to the local poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning to a competition winning design by Brightwen Binyon. It was opened in 1896 by H. Rider Haggard, author of King Solomon’s Mines. The building was re-opened by the Poet Laureate John Masefield in 1938 as a public library.
It is a Grade II listed building.
