first chemainus sawmill 1862 by Sylvia Verity Dewar

This is Sylvia’s third mural and the 20th Anniversary Mural for Chemainus. It portrarys the first sawmill in Chemainus built in 1862, a key aspect of the history of Chemainus. The mural is located in Waterwheel Park against a backdrop of mature conifer trees. To make the mural stand out in an otherwise dark and shady location, Sylvia has painted the sawmill in bright colours. On sunny days, the light changes quickly across the mural and add interest to the work.
