The Cross of Padre Luis Jayme

Padre Jayme became pastor of Mission San Diego in 1771 and made much progress in the area until 1775 when hundreds of natives set fire to the Mission buildings and murdered him. He became California’s first Christian martyr and his remains are buried here.
