PhotoGRAPHy 101: Week 1

As I have been travelling for two days during this week I haven’t had the time to register for this challenge  so I am putting together a post to meet the five themes introduced this week and at the same time introduce you to my new neighbourhood (albeit temporary).

Home

HomeSydney, NSW, Australia is home to 4.576 million people and is the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. It is also home to my eldest son and family.

 Street

Corso in Manly

The Corso in Manly is one of Sydney’s more famous streets and runs from the harbour side at Manly Wharf to the ocean side at Manly Beach. In my image the focus is on the Victorian building on the left of the street with the palm trees and the people forming the background.

Water

Sydneysiders are lucky to have many beautiful beaches on their doorstep. This is the surf at Dee Why, one of the northern beaches. Finding this odd iron piling along the beach I couldn’t decide whether a vertical or horizontal composition suits it best. Which version do you prefer?

Bliss

Bliss
Lorenzo in his ‘sunnys’

This theme asks you to consider what the word bliss means.   To me, today, bliss means that first cuddle with a new grandchild. Bliss to him was wearing his shades to block out the glare of that Australian sunshine.

Solitude

solitude

The Manly Scenic Walkway at Shelly Beach. Today we are asked to consider placement of the subject in a photograph. My focus was on the bench, but I waited until a solitary figure appeared on the bend of the track and lined up the horizon with the metal railings to frame the sea from the sky. I was also rather pleased that the bench colour matched the sea and the lines were at a nice angle to the lines of the railings. Often a photo can look to be accidental, but I moved around quite a bit to get this deliberate shot.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

    1. Thanks Aletta. Not much time (or connection) to blog so I thought I’d just select a few shots to whet the appetite. I’ll be posting about this trip all through the long winter no doubt 😀

  1. Gorgeous grand son! What a cutie.
For the record, of the two beach shots, I prefer the landscape. Enjoy your vacation – how could you not with Lorenzo! 🙂

    1. No consensus on the orientation so far! I’d prefer the horizontal if I had sw to straighten that horizon. Crooked horizons bug me, unless they are deliberately angled. Lorenzo is in NZ at the moment, but I’ll be joining him there in a couple of weeks for more cuddles 😀

  2. All lovely photos Jude but the one describing bliss melts my heart. What a sweet baby and I love the shades. Both practical and such a fashion statement. 🙂

    1. I was surprised that he kept them on. In my experience babies grab everything off their faces, but I guess he is just used to them, and they are pretty essential as the light here is very bright – wish I could bottle it and take some home with me.

  3. I’m not a baby person (understatement!) but I agree with the other comments, that is one ‘cool dude’ baby. I like the reflection in his sunnies too. As for the post shot, I like the landscape version. I hope you’re enjoying your Oz trip!

    1. Ah, now the horizontal vs vertical has evened itself out again! Babies are fine when you can hand them back to their parents and this one is exceptionally good (so far).

  4. Gorgeous, looks like you are having a wonderful time and what a cutie your grandson is…at last, you get your cuddles 🙂 Now if that isn’t bliss then I don’t know what is. Have a wonderful time Jude, I look forward to catching up with you again soon… xx

    1. Waiting for pick-up back to son’s flat and managed to hook into the free wifi in the lobby. I’m not sure how long it will last though so using it to check comments and browse posts rather than posting myself. Grandson has disappeared off to the ‘land of the long white cloud’ to visit his other grandparents, but I shall be joining them in a couple of weeks time for more cuddle time. Meanwhile I shall try and explore more of the Sydney environs, if it doesn’t become TOO hot (supposed to be in the 30 s this week – that’s not good for me), then I’m off south to meet up with a fellow blogger to explore her region.

  5. Nice to ‘place’ you in the landscape, Jude 🙂 I like the horizontal shot please and that sweetheart in the sunglasses. I’m starting to forget what sunglasses are for 😦

    1. Horizontal is now ahead, but the horizon still bugs me. Not quite straight enough 😦

Sunnies are essential here, the light is so strong and bright it makes your eyes hurt – or that may be the cold I have had!

  6. Bloody tireless, you are, Jude ! – thank all the gods ! [grin]
‘Cause otherwise everyone wouldn’t get to see how super Sydney is (and no, I’m not one whit biased !).
    😀
    I agree with Jo.

    1. Well if I can get a decent connection I will do another round-up of events this week. There may be some surprises – or not 😀

      1. Or even a connection, eh, me old china ?
        😐
Reminds me about the bloody Sheraton on the Park … That’s one thing you should be sure to pass on …

  7. Congratulation, what a wonderful new grandchild! 🙂 ❤ ❤
Enjoy and have a great time down under.
Thinking about you, Dina & co xxxx

    1. So lovely to have an excuse to visit OZ, not that I need an excuse but I have neglected it over the last decade as son has managed to get over to the UK regularly with his daughter. Good to see Sydney again and I’m sure the Bookfayries would love the glamour here if they like heat that is. I’m afraid too hot makes me wilt. And 30 degrees is too hot 🙂

      1. Yes, that’s too hot for me, but Siri and Selma don’t care, they are not affected and would L<3VE to see the glamour in Sydney! 😉
Keep chilling, Jude and don't forget to drink a lot!

  8. Perfect interpretation of all the daily themes this week Jude. What an adorable grandson, and so Aussie with the shades on. The colours and composition of that last photo is a stand-out, I love it. BTW I think I prefer the horizontal water shot.
