Home thoughts from abroad is a new series on Travel Words featuring a single photograph that reminds me of a country visited and showing something that uniquely identifies it as being ‘abroad’.

A bus from Valetta took us out to the village. It was May. We walked down to the harbour to admire the many colourful luzzu with their ‘eye.’ We browsed the market stalls and watched a policeman in conversation with some of the fishermen. I vaguely remember an argument leading to us making our own way back to the bus stop. Sleepless nights due to the heat and uncomfortable mattresses was making us cranky…
Ah, those Maltese luzzu!
Malta is a great island. I really should go back there.
Funnily enough, I have been thinking the same….
I’m loving these vivid verbal-photo travel snapshots
Thanks Tish. So many photos and not nearly enough time to write about every place.
I haven’t been to Malta, but that scene could definitely not be in the UK. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete. x
Too right. Our fishing boats are nothing like these. Malta is a nice place for a short break.
The colours are so beautiful.
The boats are so lovely.
One thing I always appreciated about Matilda was we had our comfortable mattress with us.
Best way to do it!
Oh, I learned a new word: luzzu. Interesting name and what a beautiful photo. I’ve never been to Malta. Sigh.
You’d like Malta and Gozo. Small islands, but with loads of character and history. Not much in the way of beaches, but most people don’t visit for that. Maybe you could do an island trip? Malta, Gozo, Sicily.
Sounds like a fun idea, Jude!
I enjoy the home thoughts from abroad too. It’s a great idea.
Thanks Susan, nice to know the posts appeal to folk.
Interesting, I’ve been wondering about Malta recently.
Good for a city break. Valletta is full of charm and history and all the buses go from there to the rest of the island so a good place to be based. We travelled all around by bus, even over to Gozo.
Two beauties. That crack in the wall and the shutter-colour in the first one particularly.
? Not sure this comment is on the right post.
It is. The crack is just about the lower windows on the RHS. Dunno why I noticed it – trained by Sue probably!
Gosh you have good eyesight to be seeing stuff in the background!
Learnt noticing from you
Well I didn’t notice those. Focused on the boats!
The header in my reader was a closeup of the wall with the shutters – not so when i visited the suitę. No credit to me!!!
Ah, that explains it.
Great shot…but waiting for the rest of the story 🙂
Ah, if only there was one 🙂
