Life in Colour

Another  bonus brown

The medium-sized meadow brown (Maniola jurtina) is one of the commonest grassland butterflies, on the wing in the summer from June to September.  It even flies in dull weather when other butterflies are inactive.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. Poor little commoner 🙂 🙂 I can almost feel the velvetiness of those wings. Not that you could ever stroke a butterfly 🙂 🙂

    1. When they are flying they just look brown with the occasional flash of orange. Rare to see one with its wings open like this so I was very lucky.

  2. Fabulous detail Jude 🙂 The common brown here, Meadow Argus, has similar habits. Looks a bit different, more spotty 🙂

      1. Fingers crossed for this year then.
I planted a lot of Alium bulbs before last summer, and was astonished at the ramp he of butterflies they attracted – along with the self seeded buddleia bushes! x

        1. I deliberately grow plants that attract bees and butterflies, but the butterflies were Mia last summer.

    1. They are all over the hill in summer, usually too fast to capture a photo. This one came into the garden and rested.

  3. Can’t wait for butterfly season again Jude ! Good to know that even on a DULL day we might catch a glimpse of this one . Plenty of those days … lovely close up !
