After spending several days in Lisbon we headed out of the city to Cascais for a few days, to a charming guest villa/hotel set amidst lush gardens (with a pool) and within 10 mins walk to the old town along a tree-lined street.
We happily wandered around exploring the maze of cobbled streets, finding authentic restaurants (including a marvellous steak restaurant Armazém 22 which is a little off the beaten track), secluded courtyards, benches with views.

As well as the usual Portuguese tiled façades the street signs are rather beautiful too.

There is more to Cascais than meets the eye. We enjoyed the few days we were there, mostly walking, and we discovered a lovely park with the most beautiful peacocks I have ever seen. More of that next time.

Such a wonderful trip. Thank you for taking me along 🙂
My pleasure!
Looks gorgeous, we are planning a trip this year and thinking of Cascais instead of Lisbon
Either is good, train link between the two. We took a bus to Sintra from Cascais which was very cheap.
Okay thanks
It is a fine looking town with, as you say, some wonderful backstreets for snooping around. I have the impression that it’s a little spoilt by tourism and an influx of Americans with money in their pockets, but I haven’t been for quite a few years, and I liked it very much.
We didn’t see much evidence of it being spoiled by tourism, though we mainly stuck to the old town, it was quite charming, but I am going back a fair few years so it may have changed. Perhaps you need to add it on to your next Lisbon trip?
Probably not but we’ll see. Lots of plans afoot at present 🤣🩵
When are you back in the UK?
Late on Saturday, 30th March, for a week.
Ah, hopping over for easter 🐇🐣🐰
Yes, and 2 years of house ownership. It still needs loads doing but it’s home 🤗❤️
A lovely stroll around thanks Jude 🙂
You’re most welcome Brian.
These photos are really making me want to visit Portugal, Jude.
Best wishes, Pete. x
I’d like to revisit, but to be honest I’m not very keen on flying anywhere anymore. Too tiring and too cramped and too many people with too many germs!
Lovely to be able to have a virtual wander through these streets. The silk floss trees look amazing – such unusually-shaped trunks!
They are very interesting. Pretty flowers too I believe.
Armazém is the Portuguese word for ‘warehouse’. If you drop the first syllable, what’s left corresponds to the English word magazine, whose original sense was ‘storehouse’.
I can rely on you for interesting word facts. 😀
Indubitably, and also without a doubt.
One of my first Virtual Tourist meets was in Cascais, a lovely little town! I remember loving the wavy pavements and street signs 🙂 Thank you for taking me back!
We thought it was delightful, several lovely beaches too and very clean. We could easily have spent a couple of weeks here and use the train to pop into Lisbon.
Really enjoying these wonderful postcards
It is a gorgeous place by the sea, we really enjoyed our trip there, Love the images, Jude and thanks for the trip down memory lane. Yes, I think you’re right regarding staying there and making the journey back and forth to Lisbon.
