I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling. View all posts by Heyjude

I keep on thinking a canal-based holiday would make a great change – but we never get round to it.
They were very expensive years ago, so I don’t expect they are cheap now. I’d be no good managing those locks and leaping around from side to side, I’d end up IN the canal π
Fair point. Changed my mind.
I’ll have the one on the right. See you there!
I can see you living on a narrowboat. In Europe of course π

Now, a barging trip. This is one of those things which I always said I would love to do but never got round to it. I know itβs never too late but I somehow canβt see it happening nowβ¦
Me neither, it takes strength to manage those locks!
Arenβtβt they great!
I always fancied one, but too late now.
From. experience with boating in Friesland is not always easy. Love the photo.
We watched one boat come through one of the 29 locks and I was exhausted! I wouldn’t mind living on one moored in some lovely spot. On my own though!
Always easier on your own in a small spaceπ
I like canal boats or long boats
Viking heritage? π€
Hasn’t everyone lol
We call them narrowboats here π
Not another name too π
That’s the first time I have seen canal boats moored like that. They are usually nose to tail along the riverbank. Nice shot, Jude.
Best wishes, Pete. x
It’s quite wide there, almost a pond, but not very long between the locks. Once you start on the flight, which takes 4 to 5 hours, there are no mooring spots.
We always thought we would like to do a holiday on one of these and investigated doing a round trip from Manchester. But the 97 locks in 100 miles was a turn off. It would be great if you had someone who was just waiting for you to turn up and do the hard work for you.
They do have volunteer locksmiths on some of the canals, not sure how you can find out which ones or when.

How appealing these look – just the place for a holiday. (We sometimes manage a day on a boat on the Norfolk Broads, but not in quite a long time.)
I imagine a canal boat holiday is very relaxing, very slow travel. Though I would need someone to manage the locks!
We had a few days on a little cabin cruiser (usually we just have a day boat) – slow on that too, because you have to stick with the speed limits to protect the banks from erosion etc. (Don’t know if that would apply to a canal though.)
