The 18th century Fonthill Arch, the historic entrance to the Fonthill Estate lies only a mile or so off the A303 in Wiltshire. This lodge has been transformed into a characterful holiday cottage, run by the Beckford Arms which is a pub with rooms on the estate. If you look closely you will see a Green Man carved in the archway.

We were staying, not in this lodge, but in a delightful B&B just around the corner. On our first night we walked through this entrance into the Fonthill estate parkland for about a mile (25 mins walk) to the Beckford Arms for a meal.
Through the arch there is a lake on the left, a cricket pitch on the right. You are in a valley with not a single house in view, just trees and sheep and horses and glimpses of the lake.

just wow on that final one
Yes, expertly timed 😊
Beautiful pictures, especially that last one!
Yes, we caught the sunset just right.
Wonderful Jude. My sort of place to stay
You need deep pockets to stay in the lodge (and eat at the pub)
I thought as much and knew I couldn’t afford it. Life is for dreams
Looks idyllic, and quintessentially English. Apart from Stonehenge we don’t really make a detour from the 303, we’re always too eager to get to Cornwall.
Which is why I wanted to explore the area more as I am also usually dashing through. And Salisbury Cathedral was on our list.
Ah yes. Not on the way to Cornwall but we spent a weekend at Stockbridge, including a day in Salisbury and at the cathedral. Lovely city.
What a wonderful place, Jude! Reminds me of Harewood House but much more intimate. You’re working overtime today. I’m trying to watch Dimitrov/Tiafoe, recorded from last night, but I’ve run out of time. I can see where it’s going.
There is a big house on the estate somewhere but we didn’t find it and the gardens weren’t open during our stay. Very much a place for wealthy Londoners.
Another place you’ve convinced me I need to visit.
It’s an interesting area. You need a car though to get around.
A place for wealthy Londoners ….groan
I think that Hampshire/Wiltshire /Dorset border region is popular as it is only a couple of hours from London and is very rural.
The sunset shot is perfect. I enlarged the daytime one to see the Green Man in the arch. Looks like a great place to stay.
Best wishes, Pete. x
The B&B we stayed in around the corner was excellent and much cheaper than this lodge, walking through the estate to the pub was very nice on a warm sunny evening and the meal, though a lot more than we would normally pay, was also excellent. It was the OH”s 75th birthday so a good excuse to treat ourselves.
What a lovely place! I’d have missed that green man if you hadn’t mentioned it. And as everyone has said, your sunset shot is a stunner.
Beautiful architecture! The sunset was beautiful framed.
