But What If She Says Yes?

It was all the fault of his wife thought Daniel as he stood nervously on the doorstep of the rather rundown bungalow. She had bought him a DNA Ancestry test kit for his 50th birthday thinking it would be fun for him to trace his ancestors and create a family tree.

Except it threw up all sorts of questions especially concerning one extremely strong familial link.

Taking a deep breath Daniel knocked for the second time, with only one question on his mind as he watched an elderly lady make her way slowly to the door.

“Are you my mother?”

My first and probably my only attempt at a ‘drabble’ challenged by my blogging pal Margaret for a 100 word Saturday based on this photo she took.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. Jude, that’s brilliant! Such an original idea. Well done you. This could even be the start of your first novel…. May I link back to this on Saturday when I revisit the theme?

      1. yeah I have had to write bids that have a strict word limit, and one case where they actually counted the letters and spaces. It taxes the brain. So writing some drabble by Saturday is beyond me this week!

  2. Wonderful! You are doing the family history thing, aren’t you? It works well. I know sticking to 100 is hard but it’s nice to do something different xx

    1. I’m not doing family history, but my eldest is. Supposed to be some Danish connection but he hasn’t found them. It can be quite a rabbit hole!

  3. And truth is often stranger than fiction. We know two different men, both did that DNA test and discovered that their fathers had whole other families and they suddenly had a lot of new half siblings. One man found his half family all living in a nearby town, but the other discovered his living in America and one of the half sisters had done some more digging and discovered even more half siblings living in other states! Incredible.

Your story could be the start of a novel. 🙂

  4. Awesome first attempt. Though I think you’re a natural writer. I think it’s fun keeping to a certain number. I might go from 99 to 100-word stories (drabble?).

        1. Yes. You are good at writing, but your photos are also very good. You should do a story for Margaret’s challenge. I’m sure you will have a good idea.
