Weekly Photo Challenge: Perspective

This week’s photo challenge is about perspective: post a photo which is not what it seems to be.

For those who are looking for an extra bit of challenge, show us two photos, each one showing a different angle or interpretation of the same subject:

Well I am always photographing the same subject at different angles, especially with flowers, where the shape or texture changes.

perspective — Thistle flower from above – spherical and smooth

Thistle flower from the side – oval and spiky

sunflower macro — Sunflower – a bee’s perspective

Sunflower head — Sunflower – the human perspective

and often with architectural details where distortion is inevitable

Looking up – Incised Geometric Painting inside the Main Gate (Taj Mahal)

or unusual

Old advert on a building — Street Art – white paint on top of an advertisement

Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned

The weekly photo challenge from WordPress asks us to find something to illustrate Abandoned. Cheri says “You can go literal, as I have, and share a photo of ruins, a desolate place, or your idea of a wasteland. Or you can interpret it in other ways, from images of overlooked things to forgotten people.”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Threes

Earlier this week, the Daily Post talked about taking three-picture stories. Read the article for more ideas.

So the challenge this week is to share a story of your own using this format.

This is something I often do, though not necessarily in threes, but I do like to take an overview of a scene or subject, then home in on one or two elements relating to the subject and often include a close-up shot of some detail that catches my eye. Architecture, Landscapes, Travel and Gardens lend themselves to this sort of photography, but it can be used for any subject you like.

Bath Covered Bridge, New Hampshire

First a shot of the Haverhill-Bath historic covered bridge over the Ammonoosuc River in New Hampshire. Look carefully – in the background you can just see the steeple of the clap-board church.

The second image shows the church in context with the neighbouring store

and the final shot is a close-up of the sign above the bridge entrance. Do they tell a story? You tell me.

My Magic Lamp

Krista asks in this week’s challenge, “What do you treasure? What’s most important to you?”

IN A NEW POST CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PHOTO CHALLENGE CAPTURE SOMETHING YOU TREASURE.

There are a lot of things in life which I treasure, other than my family of course, but one object that I have loved since I was a small child is this Sheffield silver-plated tea-pot belonging to my mother. It was a wedding present to her and my father back in 1945 when they married shortly after VJ Day. They didn’t have very much, so this was her pride and joy and sat in a little Victorian glass cabinet for many, many years.

As a very young child I used to love to polish it, begging my mother to allow me to remove the tarnish and restore it to a perfect reflective shine. Softly rubbing my cloth over its many faceted sides I thought it looked like the magic lamp in Aladdin, and used to daydream about what I would wish for if the Genie appeared.

My mother sadly died in 1995 shortly after her Golden Wedding anniversary and one of the few things that I took from her house at that time was ‘my’ lovely tea-pot. Unfortunately all that love and polishing had removed some of the silver-plate and it was a looking a little sorry for itself. But I contacted a silver-smith in Sheffield and had it brought back to new by being re-dipped.

It now stands in my cabinet and every time I look at it I remember my mum and my romantic memories of the Genie of the Lamp 🙂

I have chosen this post for Ailsa’s Travel Theme too as this week the word is Romance. I hope you think it qualifies.

(What has this post to do with Travel? You may well ask. Nothing really other than my father had been away in the Middle East for four years during the war and I always thought the tea-pot looked a lot like the lamp in the folk tale from Arabian Nights – a tenuous link I know)

Weekly Photo Challenge: Selfie

THIS WEEK, IN A POST CREATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CHALLENGE, SHARE A SELFIE.

I don’t do ‘selfies’, I don’t even like anyone else taking my photo let alone myself. I don’t do ‘facebook’ or ‘twitter’ or even have a smartphone, and for someone who has a degree in computer science I am a bit of a technophobe – or maybe it’s just that I don’t do sharing… except on here of course. Among friends.
