Honesty (Lunaria annua) is an annual which has lovely bright spikes of purple or white fragrant flowers in summer.
Honesty / Lunaria annua
In winter the seed pods are round (moon-shaped) and when the skin drops off to release the seeds, a lovely translucent silver disc is left. Called ‘The Money Plant’, ‘Silver Dollars’, or ‘Chinese coins’.
I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

We have honesty all over our small garden. It is self spreading. We use the seed pots in a vase. Lovely!
I used to grow this in my garden too – the seed heads look lovely in a vase.
I have always seen those ‘Chinese Lantern’ seed pods, but never knew the flower associated with them. Thanks for educating me Jude. Lovely colours too.
Regards as always, Pete. x
This is a gorgeous presentation of transformation, Jude.
Thanks Tish 🙂
Took me a while to think of something for this one!
That’s quite some transformation, Jude. Plants are such wonderful miracles aren’t they? 🙂
They are. All seeds or bulbs perform an amazing transformation!
Gorgeous captures and I would never guess it’s the same plant.
Thought you’d combined the two blogs when I saw this 🙂 Fooled me!
Well, I was going to post this on the flower blog (I usually do with flower themes) but decided to risk it on here. I guess you could say that Travel Words is ‘evolving’ and may need a new moniker before long – but what?
‘Travel words and pretty things’ is a bit long winded, isn’t it? 🙂 I absolutely love the new look though, Jude. It’s a keeper!
Colour change maybe?
I like the yellow. It’s under used around the blogs and has immediate impact on yours. Sunshine colour (or best butter 🙂 )
I love butter. And sunshine. And yes, it does seem to complement the photographs.
I’ve always loved the seedheads but didn’t know the flowers were scented, maybe its timeto grow some!
I can’t say that I have noticed the scent either, I shall make an effort to sniff some this year 🙂
I’ve thought before I should grow some and never got around to it. I must ask if any of my friends can give a cutting or some seed pods.
It grows easily from seed – self-seeds in fact so spreads!
I’ve seen the silver disks but I don’t recall ever seeing the flower. I guess I’ve noticed the disks because they are so unusual. I’ll have to keep my eyes open from now on hoping to catch the flower.
