Black and White Sunday: Heckington Windmill

The eight sail windmill was built in 1830 with five sails, but after a gale in 1890 destroyed both the cap and sails it was rebuilt by John Pocklington using machinery from Skirbeck mill in Boston, Lincolnshire.

Now the only eight sail windmill in Western Europe it is fully working and producing flour again.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. You did a marvelous job, Jude. The contrast against that dark toned sky is really great. I have googled the mill and your photo tops all the others. Thank you.

    1. Blimey Paula, I haven’t even commented on yours yet! But thanks for the very quick response 🙂

  2. Nice sky, Jude. Looks like the use of a polarising filter, but I am presuming post-processing?
I have seen that windmill many times, when we were once house-hunting in Lincolnshire, before setting on Norfolk. I never stopped to take a photo though. Maybe next time…
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. black and white conversion using the infrared option to give that contrast. It was a very deep blue sky though! A lot of agriculture around this part of Lincs but we quite liked Sleaford.

      1. We were looking all over that county at one time, but had to abandon it due to lack of work-transfer prospects for Julie.

        1. That does affect where you can move to. A bit like having kids and finding a decent school. The benefits of working from home is that we can move anywhere there is a decent broadband connection. Although it’s a bit flaky down here!

    1. Thanks Su, yes it converted well, but I started with a decent contrasting colour image – with a lovely deep blue sky for a change!

      1. Just! We messed up both getting there and coming back but the bit in the middle was great. 🙂 Just going to dive in the bath. Catch up tomorrow. 🙂

  3. It’s very handsome and the contrasts make it even more so. I wish we had windmills down here, I’ve hardly seen any in my life!

    1. Need to go to the east side Gilly, though there aren’t that many left over there either. No, actually this may call for a week in Holland 😀 😀
