September’s theme / technique: What’s the POV?
The phrase ‘point of view‘ in photography simply means the position from which the camera sees the scene. It refers to the angle or place from where you shoot. Try different ways of photographing the same subject rather than looking at it from front on.
-
-
- Use your feet and move around the subject looking for an optimum angle.
- Donβt be afraid to get down on your stomach or climb a tree.
- Look for different and dramatic angles that will make your images more striking.
- Shooting from eye-level helps your viewer connect with the subject.
- Look up β the subject will seem more powerful
- Look down β the subject will appear smaller, inferior.
- Indirect β focus on the shadow rather than the subject
- Abstract βΒ Spin around or tilt the frame
- Take a photo with something between you and your subject
-
This week's assignment - Shoot your subject from below. Looking up will give the illusion of smallness (the viewer). An upwards angle will make the subject seem much more important.

Haha! Little old ladies crawling round on their stomachs need not apply … That’s me done then … This could be interesting.
You just need something on a high shelf, Margaret π π And anything less like a little old lady I’ve never seen!
Creepy looking bug, Jude!
Hmm. Top shelf stuff, eh Jo? You start to reveal a different side of yourself.

Look up at a tall tree / building. I don’t climb trees or crawl on the ground any more either. π€£
Yes, don’t worry, I was going to find a way of not groveling too much. But I do still try to grovel.
You did a good job keeping the eye and the antenna in the focal plane.
It’s been a long time since I climbed any trees, but I’m often flat on the ground for the sake of a picture.
Great butterfly’s eye view, Jude. If they were as big as seagulls, they would be scary!
Best wishes, Pete. x
If only seagulls were as pretty I might not mind them so much!
I had a bit of a chuckle at the sight of “little old ladies” crawling about trying to get a snap for the challenge……sorry. I had to get down a bit low for my photo and it was a bit difficult to stand again π π
Getting up is never a petty sight at our age π
Never
What with going away this week, I’ve already done my post, and scheduled it. I’m quite surprised to see how much groveling, crouching and crawling was involved . Must be all that yoga doing me good.
Stunning shot Jude
Thanks Su.
That’s a very handsome butterfly! Though he looks a bit crazed with his ruffled fur and one beady eye.
Grumpy. I don’t think he was pleased having a camera thrust in his face π
Haha, I wonder what it looked like from his perspective?
