The heavy clay soil of the Reservoir Garden was improved by Beth’s team and replanted in 2017. The garden showcases a variety of ornamental grasses and prairie-style plants offering late season interest with an exciting new display of perennials, accessible via winding pathways.

When I visited Beth Chatto’s Gardens in 2016 this area was a complete blank canvas. My favourite zone then was the gravel garden, but this year the Reservoir Garden with its naturalistic prairie planting, grasses wafting in the wind and the pops of colour from the asters, heleniums and rudbeckias intertwined with dramatic seed heads was by far my favourite area. In fact I sat here for a good half hour simply enjoying the peace.

Wowza Jude! What a glorious place (and beautifully photographed). I’d love to spend a few quiet hours there. Always love to have you with us.
Thanks Tina.
Jude, I’d go crazy in that garden. I could spend the whole day there. Beautiful gallery!
There is more to come!
I believe I would find one of those benches and watch the day go by. I can only imagine the butterflies, the insects, and the birds. I was also glad you distinguished the different areas, like the Sept. garden, the prairie style, And how grasses soften spaces. Fantastic!
I enjoyed sitting here for a while just looking around. It was very peaceful.
Wow. Beautiful garden!
There are five distinct areas of these gardens and a very good nursery so you can spend a few hours here. Which I did!
They’ve achieved a lot in a relatively short time in this area. How beautiful. I love all the different shapes of the plants.
Lots of propagating I suspect, they do grow their own plants on. Lots for me to consider for my own garden, on a much smaller scale.
I enjoyed this lovely ‘visit’ to the Reservoir Garden at Beth Chatto’s. It’s interesting to see it at this time of year for me because the last time I saw it was a spring a few years ago. (It was lovely then too, with the Judas tree in flower and lots of alliums creating a purple swathe through a border.)
I can imagine that the gardens look lovely in spring too, especially the scree garden and woodland with all the bulbs.
