home thoughts from abroad

Home thoughts from abroad is a new series on Travel Words featuring a single photograph that reminds me of a country visited and showing something that uniquely identifies it as being ‘abroad’.

We are not averse to taking coach trips whilst on holiday. For one thing it is less faff than trying to arrange a hire car and driving on the opposite side of the road to England. Let someone else take the strain of negotiating unfamiliar roads and language. And so it was that on a holiday to Kefalonia more than a decade ago, we took a trip over to Ithaca. As on most coach trips you are given some free time at some point during the day to explore. I use this time to photograph the things that catch my eye such as this enormous bottle of liquid amber on the top of the steps of a shop in the Kióni marina…

Plaça de Catalunya

A more recent visit to Europe on a ‘Mother/Daughter’ trip and the place we probably went through every day. The Plaça de Catalunya, a large plaza surrounded by monumental buildings, is Barcelona’s busiest square. It is located between the old city (Ciutat Vella) and the nineteenth century Eixample district. And has lots of pigeons!

Kioni Village on Ithaca

A birthday treat from one island to another involved a ferry and a coach. Narrow roads curving around tight bends with no barriers. The mountain on one side, the sea on the other. Eyes closed. Stopping for coffee and a stroll beneath shady trees to keep cool. A fishy lunch down by the harbour with skinny feral cats weaving between your legs. Hot, tired and happy at the end of the day.

Portuguese Squares and Circles

Some you have seen before, others you have not, but with time running out I wanted to display all my Portugues squares. In a square. Of course.

We are almost coming to the end of Becky’s (“A life of a 40 something”) March challenge of square photographs with the theme:

  1. Squared Squares’ – think multiple squares and squares within squares
  2. Squaring the Circle’ – the perfect post will be a circle within a square
