“Staying in Fort Lauderdale offered me the opportunity to take a coach trip to Miami and in particular, South Beach (SoBe), with its sugar-white sand and beautifully preserved Art Deco buildings along Ocean Drive. Before we got there though we took a trip out into Biscayne Bay from where we could see the wonderful skyline of Downtown Miami itself and the fabulous millionaire properties”

“We were a little nervous staying in a motel in Santa Barbara, but it was the cheapest option and far enough away from the station which is no place to walk by at night. Apparently. Finding ourselves on a ground floor didn’t ease the mind, but it also didn’t entice us to stay indoors. We made our way to the harbour and had a pleasant walk along the shore in the twilight and finally went for dinner in a lovely steak house at the marina where we had our best meal in California so far. Along with a couple of delightful Mai Tai cocktails. Americans do make fantastic cocktails.”

Up on the roof – the Living Green roof of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The Academy tested 35 native plant species to determine which would survive the best of this roof. Nine finalists were selected – both annual and perennial wildflowers to cover 90% of the roof. “I loved staying down on Fisherman’s Wharf whenever I have visited San Francisco. We always stayed at the Argonaut which is a bit ‘kitsch’ but they have wine in the afternoon if you can get back for it and very decent wine too! It is also close to the Powell- Hyde line cable car, just around the corner and up the hill, and the historic street-cars that come this way. I love them all. I also loved wandering around the historic piers: people watching; seeing ferries come and go; looking out for the sea-lions and the birds; feeling the sun on my back as I sat and looked up at the city, with a salty tang in the air and the waft of sourdough and crab: deciding where to go next… “
