Travel Theme: Glow

Ailsa of “Where’s My Backpack?” is ready to GLOW with the flow this week. If you would like to join in with her challenge then please do. Everyone is welcome.

Just back from a trip to Cornwall where I visited several of the gardens there, many of which are famous for their camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias. But there were a lot more plants that caught my attention, including these fresh giant leaved Gunnera plants which glowed in the sunlight, and seemed an obvious choice for the challenge.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. They would come in handy as umbrellas Jude! They certainly glowed though, you must have been lucky with the Cornish weather.
    Regards as always, Pete. x

    1. When they are fully grown you can walk underneath them! The weather was typical, wet, windy, cold and warm, windy, sunny. We made the most of it, though taking photos on Bodmin was challenging 🙂

  2. Just love gunnera 🙂 They’re almost prehistoric in appearance! Is this The Lost Gardens of Heligan? It’s one I’d dearly love to go to but know that I can’t because it disabled access is impossible in many areas 😦

    1. Sarah it is still worth a visit to Heligan even though some bits may be out of reach. My husband and I went last year and he can’t walk far due to medical problems but we saw enough to enjoy ourselves. I wrote a post about it on my blog if you’d like to see photos and hear about why the garden fell into ruin.
I do hope you get to see it.
There are some fabulous gardens in Dorset too which may be more accessible.

      1. Thanks for letting me know that 🙂 It’s always good to hear what others with mobility problems think about the accessibility of places! I live very close to RHS Wisley, which Jude knows well too, and it’s access is fantastic 🙂

        1. As heavenhappens said you can get around quite a bit at Heligan, just not in the jungle area, and Trebah has wheelchair friendly routes too.

  3. Oh fabulous photos x I’m off to Cornwall in June and I can’t wait. I went to Heligan last year and loved it. I wrote a post about it which you might enjoy as I put lots of photos on it x

    1. These photos are from Trebah, but we did visit Heligan too. I shall pop along and look at your post and see what interested you there 🙂

  4. Would never have thought of green plants glowing but you’re absolutely right and you caught it beautifully! Well done Jude.

  5. They glow indeed! 🙂 Imagine to walk underneath them, a bit spooky… Lucky you having been to Cornwall now, I’m sure it’s a very attractive place with lots of fine gardens. I’d love to see it one day. And Devon and Sommerset too, there’re so many gorgeous places in England.
Greetings from sunny Norway, we’re off to the summerhouse to do some gardening. Would you believe it, it’s 20°!
    Dina, Siri & Selma xxxooo

    1. Cheers Dina and girls. I hope you found the yellow dresses to pack for your holiday 🙂 And I am very jealous of your summerhouse…

I’m off to London for a few days – very different to Cornwall AND the tube drivers are going on strike from tonight! Grrrr…

      1. Oh dear, that sounds like problems, but nevertheless safe travels, Jude. I got stuck in Cley at the beginning of the month because the aviation teams went on strike. I lost 4 nights at work, on very short notice, not at all funny.
Please don’t envy the summerhouse, looooots of work and heavy gardening at he beginning of the season, now we are totally worn out, our backs are aching. But the weather ist sunny summer perfect! 🙂
Big hug from me and the girls 🙂

    1. They really were such a bright green and the sun was just in the right place to make them glow even more!
