Zig Zag

Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California. It is famous for having a steep, one-block section that consists of eight tight hairpin turns. Taken from Coit Tower.

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. I actually wondered if Debra was going to post this, as she lives in California. But if she was, you got there first ! 🙂 And it is just about the best zigzag I can think of, offhand, Jude.

    1. First thing I thought of apart from the usual (from me) herringbone path in a garden… I do have a good zigzag staircase taken along the Ocean Road, but not digital so it would need scanning and I’m too lazy to go look for it 😉

  2. It would (or should!) certainly slow drivers down. I love those purple – blue shadows that cut across your zigzag.

Zig zag for me would be the ZigZag railway near Lithgow in NSW – or my progress down a very steep hillside into a rainforest gully.

    1. I have driven up worse roads here in the UK. I guess it is the shortness of it that makes it awkward to drive down, or up – or is it actually one way?

  3. This looks familiar, and I have never been to the USA. Was it featured in the car chase from the film ‘Bullitt’, with Steve McQueen perhaps?
    Great shot anyway Jude!
    Regards as always, Pete.

    1. It’s a very famous street Pete – because of the number of hairpin bends in such a short distance. I’ve probably driven worse over here. It’s very touristy! It may have featured in Vertigo?

  4. Jude I have seen a few submissions of this street for the challenge however your perspective is different. I look forward to seeing what angles and distance you use in your photos because i know i can always expect something creative and unique. Well done!

    1. Well these shots were taken from the top of the Coit Tower, so quite high up, with a 20 zoom bridge camera, so not a very high spec beast. I did wait a while for the cable car to stop in exactly the right spot at the top of the hill 😀

  5. have seen a few images of this street for the zig zag challenge, all down at eye level, this image gives a great perspective of its zig zag nature

    1. Difficult to capture the actual zig zag of this street from the street. Coit Tower is perfect for capturing the streets of San Francisco 🙂

  6. Awwwwww! I wish I had taken that photo! I thought of Lombard Street when I read the challenge but I would have to have nicked a photo from Google pics. I think that would be cheating. Great photograph, Jude!

    1. Thank you Carol. I wasn’t sure how good this photo was given how far away I was when I took it, but it does show the zig zag well from this direction.
