Travel Theme: Orange

Orange is the colour of saffron, pumpkins and apricots. It is between red and yellow on the spectrum of light, and in the traditional colour wheel used by painters. Its name is derived from the orange fruit.

Travel Theme: Simplify

The gentle clatter of woods on the jack cuts through the stillness of the evening.

The simple pleasure of flat-green bowling in the late-evening sunshine is enjoyed by this group of pensioners in Dumfries and Galloway.

Travel Theme: Meeting Places

A meeting place is by definition a place where people meet. It can be a public landmark, a railway station, a pub, a café, a statue, a park gate or something iconic like under a well-known clock.

So how about the Praça do Comércio, Lisbon’s vast riverside square where over the last centuries numerous processions, festivities, concerts and even executions have taken place. In 1974 thousands of people assembled here during the revolution that overthrew the dictatorial regime.

The Tourist Information Centre can be found in one of the classical old buildings on the west side as well as one of the city’s legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada which dates from 1782 and was a favourite of poets Fernando Pessoa and Almeida Garrett and of novelist Eça de Queiroz.

The Statue is of King Jose I showing him on horseback, wearing his emperor’s mantle, and measuring 14 meters in height counting from the pedestal.

And at the northern side is the Arco da Rua Augusta, a triumphal arch that leads to the Rua Augusta, a beautifully paved pedestrianized street.

One Day One World Project: 17:00 to 18:00 hours

When I see something like this opposite where I am staying, it just cries out for me to investigate. Just who were these people?

At 5:30 in the evening, the rain had cleared and the sun encouraged us to go out and explore the little town that will be our home for the next week. And an open doorway to a cobbled wynd (a narrow street or alley in Scotland, especially between houses) …well could you resist?

Stained-glass artist and watercolourist E A Taylor and his wife, illustrator Jessie M King used to live here after their return from Paris at the outbreak of the First World War. (Both attended the Glasgow School of Art )

Kirkcudbright is known at ‘The Artists Town‘ having hosted generations of painters, craftmakers and artisans, a culture still thriving today.

And along with a cute and friendly tabby cat, I unexpectedly found this.
