A scene I am sure Becky will have seen for herself – this photo was taken from the viewing platform at the top of the Santa Justa Lift (Portuguese: Elevador de Santa Justa) in Lisbon. With a view over that amazing wave pattern in Rossio Square. Cropped and zoomed in to show the magnificent terracotta tiles.

Home thoughts from abroad is a new series on Travel Words featuring a single photograph that reminds me of a country visited and showing something that uniquely identifies it as being ‘abroad’.
A bus from Valetta took us out to the village. It was May. We walked down to the harbour to admire the many colourful luzzu with their ‘eye.’ We browsed the market stalls and watched a policeman in conversation with some of the fishermen. I vaguely remember an argument leading to us making our own way back to the bus stop. Sleepless nights due to the heat and uncomfortable mattresses was making us cranky…

Up on the roof – the Living Green roof of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The Academy tested 35 native plant species to determine which would survive the best of this roof. Nine finalists were selected – both annual and perennial wildflowers to cover 90% of the roof.
