Tančící dům (The Dancing House)
This week brings us to Prague where this unusual modern building can be found alongside the River Vltavar. Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers – because the house resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous.
It was designed by Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in co-operation with Canadian architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot (where the previous building had been destroyed during the Bombing of Prague in 1945). The building was designed in 1992 and completed in 1996.
I’ll let you decide which one is Ginger 🙂
The Dancing House is certainly a most unusual piece of architecture. I guess Ginger must be the more shapely one of the two. 🙂
I think it probably is Sylvia! I love the curves 🙂
One of my favourite Prague landmarks Jude. Who would have thought that such a potentially incongruous building would fit in so well, with the architecture of this ancient city?
Regards as always, Pete.
It has been very cleverly designed to balance with those Baroque buildings at either side of it. I just love the wavy windows and how they look like picture frames.
I love it: The Fred and Ginger building. Yes, I agree with Sylvia, obviously the curvaceous one is Ginger! 🙂
Apparently they don’t like to refer to it as the Fred and Ginger building any more – just the Dancing House!
Oh well, either one is interesting! 🙂
my daughter is an architect –

so it was a must to shoot a
Gehry building in Dusseldorf:
Thanks for the link Frizz – another wonderful building!
What an incredible building and photograph Jude, and what a great name, The Fred and Ginger! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like this, brilliant photo for this theme!
PS How are things today gremlin wise? I’m ok so far but had problems last night ;-( xx
I love architecture which is why I am attempting to do this A-Z challenge using buildings or some sort of architectural link (bridges maybe) or other urban items rather than places. We shall see how it goes!
I am doing OK today so far, but last night was pretty dreadful. I gave up on WP using Chrome.
Yes, this is a great challenge for you Jude with all your wonderful photos.
Last night was very bad. I’ve had trouble loading pages today so despite me thinking that Chrome was better I was wrong so will do the same as you now.
Architecture – an interesting take on the challenge … Modern Gaudi-ism
I love Gehry’s style.
I bet he has a sense of humour too.
I love this picture – what a building! Architecture is a form of sculpture and sculpture is my favourite thing, so this is just ACE!
I love sculptures and statues too – some may creep into this challenge later on!
Yay!
Yes, a building that dances – Ginger always backwards and in heels – if I remember rightly. What a great post.
Thanks Tish! I can see her now… 🙂
What a great name for such a unique building. 🙂 The Dancing House is a more universal title but I like Fred and Ginger myself…
I like Fred and Ginger too 🙂
Come on, kiddo- let’s dance! 🙂
😀 😀
