Continuing with my Barcelona posts, I couldn’t help but notice this rather grand house in the Pedralbes district, up by the monastery. Obviously from the Modernista period, with ornate iron-work, coloured tiling, a roof terrace with a pretty stone balustrade and windows picked out in contrasting brickwork. It is however, sadly derelict with balconies rusting and floorless, graceful windows with broken shutters and bricked up openings, which keeps the house secure from squatters and seems to be the norm on mainland Europe, whereas we simply board them up.

A grand house once (or maybe two apartments) I hope that one day whatever is preventing its sale or restoration is resolved as it would be a shame for it to deteriorate further, and one only has to imagine what beauties possibly lie inside.
Please visit Paula to see other representations of this week’s challenge.
Wouldn’t it just be great to have a peek inside! Great window grilles, the Spanish are good at these, and similar ones are visible in Cuba and other Latin American countries….
I would have loved to see inside, although you would need a torch! I am guessing there will be lots of tiles and more elaborate staircases.
Wonderful!
I absolutely love whatever you’ve done with those photos. The first one is full of atmosphere and then you give us all those wonderful details. The final shot of the whole building was a bit of a surprise. And you’re so on-top of architectural styles. A lovely post to wake up to on Monday morning.
The effects are all from Nik software – blame Sue for that 🙂 And the house is so beautiful despite the fact it is abandoned. Barcelona is full of this type of architecture. I even found a stylised eagles balcony, similar to something you posted from Warsaw.
I also love the shots, and the editing. It is such a shame to see beautiful buildings abandoned and shut up, even when they do make excellent subjects for photography!
The main shot looks like a glass plate image from the late 1800s. Just right for the photo.
A nicely chosen effect, Jude.
Best wishes, Pete. x
Thanks Pete, I like the effect too.
love all of these!
Thanks Lisa 🙂
I walk by SO many old homes and buildings and sigh when they are being let go 😦
My first thought is always, I wish I had the money to restore it! It’s probably better that I don’t because I would have projects all over the place and I’m sure I would be terribly broke! Wonderful images, thanks for sharing them!
Haha… I have the same thoughts! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Derelict but beautiful 😍
Wonderfully shaped balconies – excellent choice for this theme, Jude. Very fine edit and presentation. Thank you!
Thank you for hosting the challenges Paula – sorry I haven’t got over to yours to leave a comment, but our internet access was appalling yesterday, took me all day to get the post published and then I was too tired to do anything late last night when access came back! I shall try and rectify that today 🙂
Do not worry, Jude, and I really appreciate your persistence to post for the challenge despite the circumstances.
What a shame that it is derelict – you can see how beautiful it must have been.
Hopefully it will be again one day, just needs some TLC at the moment.
