March Square | Squares

Azulejo (Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tilework.)

If you fancy a distraction from the weather this month then join in with Becky’s (“A life of a 40 something”) March challenge of square photographs with the theme:

  1. Squared Squares’ – think multiple squares and squares within squares
  2. Squaring the Circle’ – the perfect post will be a circle within a square

Since Becky spends a lot of her time in Portugal I think she might like my first entry.

March Square | 1st March

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. I love these! They are stunning, what a fabulous first entry 😀 thank you for starting with these. Where were these azulejos?

    1. Somewhere in Lisbon, Becky. Hoping that you are not too strict on the ‘square’ / ’round’ formats as I have taken a few liberties with some of my squares 😉

        1. Cor you are a hard master… OK, it was at the miradouro de santa luzia in Alfama. That do you? Some lovely tiles there, but also in disrepair sadly.

Are you still clicking the castanets then? And twirling the skirt?

        2. Almost sat on the stage last night we were so close! Did anyone ever tell you sherry and wine don’t mix? Great night though. I have a couple of pics up on Instagram. No time to blog. Cathedral is astounding. Doing Alcazar in the rain this morning then driving back xx

        3. It’s quick and easy to share photos from my phone. 🙂 At some point I will show you a delectable sherry flavoured dessert I had one evening. Can’t remember when I last saw such rain and the poor palm trees were bent double in Jerez. A mini tornado hit Faro in our absence and a bar in the marina lost it’s roof. We were sat there just a week or two ago. 😦

        4. Ah, well, I hardly ever use my phone to take photos, only to share with the family over WhatsApp. The weather is definitely weird this year. I assume you are ‘home’ now safely. Should be all over by the time you hit Hartlepool next week.

  2. I bought similar tiles in Amsterdam once. We used to use them as coasters. Something about that simple blue and white is so appealing.
    Best wishes, Pete.
