September’s theme / technique: What’s the POV?
The phrase ‘point of view‘ in photography simply means the position from which the camera sees the scene. It refers to the angle or place from where you shoot. Try different ways of photographing the same subject rather than looking at it from front on. How you shoot a scene can determine the mood and effect a photo has on the viewer.
-
-
- Use your feet and move around the subject looking for an optimum angle.
- Donβt be afraid to get down on your stomach or climb a tree.
- Look for different and dramatic angles that will make your images more striking.
- Shooting from eye-level helps your viewer connect with the subject.
- Look up β the subject will seem more powerful
- Look down β the subject will appear smaller, inferior.
- Indirect β focus on the shadow rather than the subject
- Abstract βΒ Spin around or tilt the frame
- Take a photo with something between you and your subject
-
This month's final assignment - Shoot your subject from above. Now the subject seems small and the viewer in charge.

The soft colours are lovely in this. π π Happy Sunday, Jude!
Thanks Jo. Sunny, so I might get some bulb planting done!
That’s a beautiful image, with the contrast in colours.
The more I look at this the more I realise how high up you were, the people are tiny . . .
It is high at this point. Bedruthan Steps.
Just looked them up . . wonderful. I see though the actual steps are closed because of a rockfall last winter. How did these people get down?
This photo is from a few years ago. I guess now the only way in is by boat, but it’s a rough part of the coast.
ah! ooh yes not sure I’d like to risk it by boat. I am not very good getting on and off boats at the best of time!
PS Just realised I have never said how much i like this photo. Wonderful point of view π
I always enjoy seeing people like ants in a landscape. It makes me think that we are ultimately insignificant in the face of nature.
Best wishes, Pete. x
True. We are.

I really like this Jude. The colours are joyful.
Thanks Su. I might try and get back there this autumn if we have a nice day, lovely walks along the cliffs there, though no access to the beach at the moment due to a rockfall last winter.
Marvellous, Jude! The Bedruthan steps coast must have eroded a bit since I was last there in 1984
The entire North Coast is eroding, like so much of our coastline.
