This month we will be looking for Black or Grey. Black is not a colour at all. Theoretically it is the absence of all colour. Yet black is distinctive. Lines are bolder, shadows deeper, colours brighter against a black background.

This week we are back in the Lake District where you can find many different shades of grey in both the natural world and man-made constructions.

The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird, a species of swan which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. Within Australia, the black swan is nomadic, with erratic migration patterns dependent upon climatic conditions. It is a large bird with mostly black plumage and a red bill. Although native to Australia there are some living in the UK. This one was photographed at the Claremont Landscape Garden in Surrey.

Cheeky Grey Squirrel
Cheeky Grey Squirrel in Cape Town’s Company Gardens. They were introduced by Cecil Rhodes in 1890. These are larger than their European counterparts and the Garden’s oak trees and plenty of water channels offer a perfect habitat. They are fairly habituated to humans and will eat out of your hand;  you can find someone to sell you a packet of peanuts with which to feed them.

The last of my transport posts, this month features this lovely iconic bus from Gozo as well as my last historic streetcar from San Francisco.

Kansas City, Missouri-Kansas 1056, built in 1948. This car is painted in tribute to Kansas City, which ran PCC streetcars from 1941 to 1957. Kansas City’s PCCs – 184 in all – were painted to emphasize their modern lines, with a black ‘swoosh’ on the sides to highlight the logo of Kansas City Public Service Company (KCPS), which featured Frederic Remington’s famed sculpture “The Scout” on a red heart.
