The Starling (Sturnus Vulgaris) is one of the most common birds in Britain and is more colourful than you think. The plumage is shiny black, glossed purple or green, and spangled with white, particularly strongly so in winter.

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling. View all posts by Heyjude
When I saw your title in my feedI thought it was Startling! But actually, the starling is startling – such beautiful colours.
he is a very startling starling, I never realised they were so colourful.
One word: fantastic! 🙂
👍
I love starlings and you’ve really captured their beautiful iridescence in this photo 🙂
I was lucky that this chappy stood still for so long, a messy background though hence the silky effect.
Ah, but I rather like the silky look 🙂 It suits their wonderful plumage! I was watching them in our garden just today. No great photos as they were perching high in the trees and on our roof! What always astounds me about starlings is their vocal range. So many different types of sound!! I’d love to record them but there’s far too much background noise where we are.
I thought that too. Glad you like 🙂
🙂
This is frameable don’t you think? I’m very fond of starlings in the big gangs!
Have you seen a murmuration? I have years ago, but not for a very long time.
Ooh: look at all those iridescent feathers. They’re more colorful than those of grackles.
Do you get starlings in Texas? I know I have seen them in California.
I know little about birds, but based on the article and map at

I can answer a resounding yes to your question.
Wow you can really see the different colours in this photo.
And I thought they were black!
So vibrant and full of detail. Lovely image Jude.
He is so glossy he glows…
Oh Jude, this is so beautiful, looks like an oil painting…
He’s a beauty isn’t he? I always thought they were ‘just’ black.
Yes, me too! Stunning…
