This month is not about creating black and white photographs, but in finding the true blacks or greys in a colourful world.
The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird, a species of swan which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. Within Australia, the black swan is nomadic, with erratic migration patterns dependent upon climatic conditions. It is a large bird with mostly black plumage and a red bill. Although native to Australia there are some living in the UK. This one was photographed at the Claremont Landscape Garden in Surrey.
I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

Wow! What a striking fellow!
Yes, the red bill and red eye are brilliant. I’m now wondering whether they have red legs.
They’re handsome guys, aren’t they?
I think I have a photo of some in Canberra, one with a baby on its back, but pre digital. Need to have a look.
You’ve reminded me of a strange sighting, Jude. We were walking over the bridge in Bridgnorth, and there was a lone black swan amongst a bunch of white swans and others. Escaped from somewhere.
Here are my black birds – some Wenlock corvids: https://tishfarrell.com/2021/11/24/a-spot-of-bird-watching/

A handsome chap indeed Jude 🙂
I have never seen a black swan. Good to know there are some in England.
Best wishes, Pete. x
