Life in Colour

To find out more about this year’s photo challenge here on Travel Words, please read this post.

This month we will be looking for Purple. A secondary colour made from red and blue, though you can find many different shades of purple. Try to stay clear of violet though as that will be making its own appearance. Although found in nature in shades of crocuses, lilacs, and irises look for the bruised colours in a sunrise or sunset, an indigo sea, a full moon in an inky sky. The darkness of a red wine, a rich velvet curtain or a starling’s wing.

And although a little late, I shall dedicate this one to World Bee Day.

There’s a website for World Bee Day that tells you all about the importance of bees and the essential role they play in the production of our food.

Are there any unusual purples in your world?

Day Twenty-Two

The theme for Becky’s  April Squares challenge is ‘top’

    1. On Top of the World – summit, crown, peak or uppermost part of something
    2. Under the Big Top – topping or covering (or if you’re really lucky circus)
    3. Room at the Top – first or highest in position
    4. Cherry on Top – something made even more wonderful by becoming square
    5. Top and Tail – or maybe you’d prefer to play around with word combinations such as top dog, top stitch, top full, top line, top fruit, top hat, top secret, top knot, top drawer and top dollar!

Happy 50th Anniversary of Earth Day: Theme = Climate Change

Earth Day 2020 will be far more than a day. It must be a historic moment when citizens of the world rise up in a united call for the creativity, innovation, ambition, and bravery that we need to meet our climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future.”

Perhaps now that people have seen the difference it makes by not having roads choked with traffic, skies filled with planes and cities swamped with thousands of tourists descending from huge cruise ships they might consider what is most valuable to them? Something good may come out of this horrid surreal situation we all find ourselves living through. My hope is that people will appreciate the cleaner air, the value of nature in our lives and a slower, more gentle way of life.

Today’s square honours the work of the bee – a pollinator that keeps us in food and which is under great threat – so if you can, provide a safe place for the bees to nest, drinking water and bee-friendly plants in your garden.

Topsy-Turvy

Red-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius) feeding on three-cornered leek (snow bell or onion weed). It can be found in gardens, farmland, woodland edges, hedgerows and heathland: anywhere there are flowers to feed on. It is a social bee, nesting in old burrows, or under stones.

on top of the world Bee on Allium

Last summer I grew Allium sphaerocephalon. It is also known as the drumstick allium because it  bears dense green drumstick-style flower heads which mature to maroon-red. It’s a great choice for growing in a mixed herbaceous border among ornamental grasses, or in gravel gardens. It also works well in a pot. And the bees love it!

A Purposeful Flight

The new January Squares challenge, hosted as ever by Becky, the Queen of Squares,  is all about ____light. That’s words ending in light. In this often dull month light of any kind is what we all need to lift our spirits as we wait impatiently for spring to begin. Click on the link to find out more.
